In the Rhine Valley
But there's more ...
Not far from the Dutch border, the landscape changes and becomes flatter and vaster. At that spot the
river Rhine divides into three rivers: the Waal, Rhine and IJssel, each with their own characteristics
and sweetness. Each of the three magnificent rivers do continue to flow through lowland sometimes
surrounded by hills deposited in the last ice age. On the rivers shipping towards the Ruhr area takes place
and sometimes the ships will coninue even further upstream. The Ruhr area itself is characterized by its
rivers and hills interspersed with large old industrial cities in the plains. Although there is still a
lot of industrial activity, the major polluting industries often have disappeared and turned into green
veins, which will even continue into the centre of some of the old cities. Meanwhile both the culture and
history of the great cities remained. You could endlessly enjoy the best of both the culture of the old
industrial cities with heritage and the green lungs upto the city centers.
